Audrey Ann Somers, age 86, of Stevens Point, passed away on July 7 in the loving arms of her husband of 66 years, Joseph Somers. She was born to Roman (Buckets) and Doris Nowacki, being raised on the north side of Stevens Point. Audrey attended St. Peter grade school and proudly graduated from St. Joseph Academy. The Roman Catholicism that she was taught and raised in by her parents and schools guided her life from birth to death.
After marrying the love of her life Joseph in 1957, Audrey's adventures began. Due to the activation of the Stevens Point National Guard Unit, she helped move her young family to Washington State. Several years after returning, she conquered her fear of flying and took off. Between her first trip to Flint, Michigan and her last to Boise, Idaho, she explored Poland, Germany, Peru, Italy, San Francisco, New York and too many states to list.
Between traveling and lovingly parenting her family, Audrey assisted Joe in starting the first landscaping business in Portage County, Somers Landscaping. When her youngest started school, Audrey decided to study and research her family's genealogy. Due to her research, she was instrumental in establishing Stevens Point's first sister city, Gulcz, Poland. Because of her knowledge of local Polish history and ancestry, Audrey was the main spokesperson and contributor to PBS's Hometown Stories: Stevens Point.
Being immensely proud of her Polish heritage, Audrey also helped start the Wisla Polish Dancers. This performance group was a popular attraction at fairs and festivals throughout the upper Midwest. Audrey was also active in the Dozynki (Polish) Harvest Festival and was a founding member of the Polish Heritage Awareness Society. Up until this spring, Audrey could be found dancing the polka every Sunday afternoon at parish picnics and other local venues.
Audrey will be remembered for her elaborate Christmas displays, delicious homemade meals, and her generous loving policy of her home being open to one and all. She will be missed by many. Audrey Somers is survived by her husband Joseph Somers; children Michael (Lynda) Somers, Michelle (Peter) Pehoski, son-in-law John Migas, Pamela Somers, Lisa (Michael) Pepin, Paul (Andrea) Somers, 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and cousin Marcy Pelowski. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Carrie, siblings Ronald and Robert Nowacki, Carol Wiza, and grandson Zebadiah Pehoski.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Audrey will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday July 12, 2024, at St. Peter Catholic Church 800 Fourth Ave. Stevens Point. Rev. John Potaczek will officiate. Burial will follow in the Guardian Angel Cemetery.
