Catherine M. Smith, age 86, of Stevens Point, passed away in the early morning of November 5 th , 2022 at the Aspirus Hospice House in Wausau.
Cathy was born October 13, 1936 to the late Clarence and Susan Smith. She graduated in 1954 from St. Joseph Academy and then went to work for Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point. She was married and divorced and had three children – Susan Van Prooyen (Minnetonka, MN), Carla Van Prooyen (Foley, AL) and Paul Van Prooyen (Sayner, WI).
After her children were in school, she worked as a Floral Designer at Sorenson's Floral and Angel Floral for over 35 years. Her love of people and flowers kept her working until her late 70's. She created thousands of beautiful floral bouquets for celebrations and memorials that inspired the Stevens Point community. Maintaining relationships with family and friends were always a priority and she would always jump at the chance to grab a coffee and catch up on the latest events.
Cathy loved her annual visit to Gulf Shores, AL to visit her children and grandchildren as well as her many trips to Milwaukee and Minneapolis to visit her daughter, grandson and great granddaughter - which also included much shopping and dining out. She was an avid watcher of PBS mystery shows and was a lifelong Democrat keeping up on all levels of government politics. She, along with her brother James Smith, took care of their father until his passing in 1994. As she grew older James took care of her and provided the most comfortable space he could until the cancer became too strong for anyone but medical staff to handle.
Cathy is survived by her brother James, her sister-in-law, Delores Borkenhagen, her three children as well as 3 grandsons (David, Kyle and Christopher) and 7 great grandchildren (Annika, Madison, Abby, DJ, Tristan, Zhahl & Kyle) as well as 4 nephews and 1 niece, cousins and many friends.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, sister Shirlee, brother Pete and 2 nephews.
A heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Aspirus Hospice for their wonderful care the last six months as well as to Gary Flugaur her former boss and friend and of course to beloved Uncle Jimmy.
