Cecelia (Pobjecky) Jonaitis 100, Died Monday, April 15, 2024, at her residence on the farm in the Town of Dewey with her children holding her hands.
Cecelia was born March 22, 1924, on the farm in the Town of Dewey to the late Elizabeth and Michael Pobjecky. Cecelia attended Liberty Bell Grade School (one room schoolhouse) and graduated from PJ Jacobs High School in 1943. Cecelia was employed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee and St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point as a nursing assistant. Her employer offered her a scholarship to nursing school but she was called back home to the farm.
Cecelia enjoyed hard work: baling hay, field work, helping the threshing crew, cleaning barns, milking cows – and ending the day with a cold Point beer. Cecelia enjoyed life's simple pleasures. Her interests were varied as a homemaker, baker, soup maker, gardener, canner, tree planter, rose grower, card and Yahtzee player, avid reader, and cook book collector. She enjoyed attending church functions and estate sales.
Cecelia was married to Edmund A. Jonaitis on June 20, 1959, at St. Francis Xavier in Knowlton. He died in December 1992. They had three children born in Stevens Point. The family later moved to Waukegan, Illinois, where Edmund was employed at US Steel. While raising her children, Cecelia drove a special education bus for Ritzenthaler for 18 years where her family got to know "her kids." Cecelia was an active member of the St. Bartholomew Mother's Club, serving as president for several years.
In later years, Cecelia and Edmund moved back to the farm. Cecelia was a member of Cabrini Society, St. Anne Circle and volunteered for many years at the Stevens Point Aging and Disability Center.
There were a few absolutes. There was always room for you at the table and you never left the house hungry. Perhaps her greatest joy were her three children. She loved them with all her heart. Her kindness, gentle disposition, and sweet smile charmed and endeared her to everyone she met.
Cecelia leaves behind daughter Kathleen (Scott) Heiberger, Mosinee, Wisconsin; son Mark (Claire) Jonaitis, Sandy, Utah; daughter Elizabeth (Chris) Vaisvil, St. Charles, Illinois, and seven grandchildren, Alexander Vaisvil; Michael (Taylor), Joseph, Emily and Anne Jonaitis; and Andrei and Alexei Heiberger.
Cecelia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Joseph Cvik, Edward Cvik, Elizabeth Pobjecky, John Pobjecky, Anne (Pobjecky) Padilla, Paul Pobjecky, Veronica Pobjecky, Rose (Pobjecky) Archibald, and Michael Pobjecky.
Cecelia will be forever missed by her family, and by her cuddle buddy Lonnie the Cat.
