David "Dave" Michael Henneghan

March 3, 1958 — August 27, 2024

Stevens Point

David (Dave) Michael Henneghan M.D. passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 27, 2024 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital following complications from an emergency splenectomy.

Dave was born in Lansing, MI, on March 3, 1958 to parents John (Jack) P. Henneghan Jr. and Kathleen (Kay) Mary Cole Henneghan. He spent his childhood with sisters Kathy, Mary, and Ann in East Lansing, graduating from East Lansing High School in 1976. From there, he pursued a career in medicine, attending Albion College, where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in Biological Sciences. Dave attended medical school at Michigan State University, then completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

It was in an operating room on one of his residency rotations that he first met the love of his life, Karen (Horning) Henneghan. After a first date of flying kites, the two were inseparable, and married on September 27, 1986. They moved to Stevens Point, WI in 1990 where Dave began practicing as an orthopedic surgeon at Rice Medical Center, and later transitioned to working at St. Michael's Hospital, then Klasinski Clinic (now Stevens Point Orthopedics).

Dave had a true passion for his career. Throughout his 32 years practicing as an orthopedic surgeon, he prioritized developing relationships with his patients and understanding and advocating for their needs.

His marriage and family were some of Dave's proudest accomplishments. Dave and Karen dedicated much of their lives to raising their two children, Patrick and Laura Henneghan. Dave was a devoted father, and especially enjoyed sharing his love of cycling and spending time outdoors with his family.

Throughout their time in Stevens Point, WI, Dave donated his time and talents to such organizations as The Green Circle Trail, Iola Winter Sports Club, Boy Scouts of America, Camp Manito-wish YMCA, and Portage County Youth Soccer.

Dave lived a life of passion, kindness, and care for others. He was beloved by so many, from his family and friends, to the many lives he touched throughout his career in his Central Wisconsin community.

Dave is survived by his wife Karen of 38 years; his son Patrick and his partner Lisa Foster; daughter Laura and her husband Peyton Bell. He is also survived by his sister Kathy MacLachlan, her husband Don MacLachlan, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dave's family thinks the world of him, will miss him deeply, and cherish the time they shared with him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dave's name can be made to the Plover River Crossing Trail Project Fund, which will go toward funding the Henneghan Family Bridge on the Green Circle Trail in Stevens Point, WI.
