Don was born on January 20, 1939 in Lodi, Wisconsin, the son of Henry and Helen Benzmiller (Bachtle).  He grew up in Madison and spent his childhood living in multiple cities across the United States.  He graduated from PJ Jacobs High School in 1957 and soon after began working as a draftsman at Vetter Mfg., working there for nearly 20 years before becoming a building inspector for the city of Stevens Point.  He worked full-time for the city and at the age of 65 continued to work part-time as a building inspector up until the age of 75. His marriage to Virginia "Ginny" Tech took place on October 12, 1963.

Don lived a life led by faith.  He loved his family and relished his time with all of his daughters and grandkids.  Don and Ginny enjoyed their winters in Florida where they developed many cherished friends.  He thoroughly enjoyed golfing in leagues in Wisconsin and Florida and made it a goal to golf as much as possible.  He was an avid woodworker and craftsman who never shied away from tackling any project.  He had an amazing sense of humor and loved telling funny stories of past escapades.  He will be sorely missed by so many.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ginny, his daughters Laura Reed (Kenny Fisher) New Berlin, WI,  Beth (Keith) Karr, Stevens Point, WI, Sue Franz, Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Austin Franz, Conner (Christina) Franz, Chase Franz, Taylor Reed & fiancé, Alex Weiss, Kyle Karr & fiancé, Leah Olsen and Haley Karr. Sister, Mary Rucker, Pittsville. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Brady Franz.
