Douglas "Doug" J. (John) Warner
Of Plover passed away early Wednesday morning, December 22, 2021 at Whispering Pines Assisted Living in Plover while under the care of Compassus Hospice with his loving family at his side.
Age 86 Doug was born February 13, 1935 in Stevens Point. He was the son of the late Claude and Gladys (Brown) Warner. He attended local schools, graduating from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1954 and also attended UW- SP. He entered the United States Coast Guard on July 20, 1954 in Green Bay, WI. Doug served at a CS2, Commander of the 9 th Coast Guard District in Cleveland, OH, serving on the USCG Lightship "5 Fathoms" which was a New Jersey navigational aid to commercial traffic. He was honorably discharged on July 18, 1958 in Staten Island, New York. Doug received the National Defense Service Medal and the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.
Doug met the love of his life, Sandie Flisick, a baker and clerk at the Palace Bakery. Doug would stop in while "walking his beat" or on his way back to the Police Station at the end of his shift. It is a truism that "cops never pass up a donut" especially with a hot cup of coffee. Doug and Sandie got married November 11, 1964 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. After their marriage, Doug started classes at St. Peters to become a catholic. After his shift, we would meet with Fr. John at the rectory. With Doug still in his police uniform, Fr. would ask the same question "How many people did you arrest today and why". It was Father's excitement of the day, I think he learned quickly that Stevens Point was pretty quiet city, unlike the ones on the TV shows
Doug was a member of the Stevens Point Police Department from 1960 to 1964, when he then joined the Portage County Sheriff's Department in 1964 retiring as a Lieutenant on January 5, 1990. Doug continued his community service by serving as the Plover 15 th District County Board Supervisor from 1990 to 2008 serving on the Law Enforcement, Space and Property and Legislative Committees.
He also assisted with the Special Olympics for over 28 years. He continued sharing of his time as a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church and being a Eucharistic Minister. He worked in the church kitchen preparing community dinners, bingo food, ponczkas and also festival baking. He loved working the Community Thanksgiving Dinner for over 23 years.
In his younger years of 55, he was involved in long distance bike riding completing 31,000 miles in 10 years joining SAGBRAW & GRABAAWR bicycle trips. He enjoyed golfing equally for the social aspects as well as the game. Doug was a fan of all Wisconsin professional sports, but especially enjoyed watching his grandsons compete in cross country, track and field and football. Doug relished a good movie and it was not unusual to travel to Milwaukee or Madison to see a new release. He was also a past trivia participant for the team "The Choir Boys". He also enjoyed traveling, bowling, hunting and fishing.
He enjoyed his yard, always tinkering with it to make it look better and adding "just one more" hosta's. The loves of his life were his two grandsons Josh and Nate Bronk. He especially had fun watching professional wrestling with them and had many discussions on this subject with them.
In lieu of flowers donations in Doug's name would be appreciated and will be sent to Casa Hogar II; an orphanage in Peru which Doug visited twice.
Survivors include his wife Sandie of Plover, his daughter Stacy Warner of Stevens Point and his two grandsons Joshua and Nathan Bronk. Further survived by one sister: Joan Holcomb of Nekoosa. Three sisters in laws; Sue Warner of Springfield, IL, Cheryl DeKay of Plover and Germaine Bigus of Polonia .
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Boyd, sister Delores Zdroik, and five brothers in laws; Jerry Zdroik, Roger Holcomb, Robert Bigus, Larry Kezeske and Tom DeKay.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Onitillo along with the staff at Ministry Health/Marshfield Clinic Oncology departments. Without their encouragement, expertise and understanding the difficult last 10 years of cancer we went through with Doug would have been formidable.
