Ernest "Ernie" J. Simkowski
Of Stevens Point passed away Sunday evening July 23, 2023 at Aspirus St. Michaels Hospital. Age 96 Ernie was born April 11, 1927 in Stevens Point, WI.
He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Schmanski) Simkowski. He grew up on the family farm in the town of Linwood.
His marriage to Grace Marie Kaminski took place on November 12, 1949 at St. Peters Catholics Church. After their marriage the couple settled in Stevens Point where they raised their three children. Grace preceded him in death on August 15, 1987.
He later married Loretta M. (Woloshek) Laska on June 13, 1990. After their marriage the couple settled in Stevens Point. Loretta preceded him in death on May 18, 2012.
In his younger years, Ernie was a Golden Gloves Boxer out of Marshfield. In 1949 he was the Golden Glove open division Champion in his weight bracket Along with his family Ernie owned and operated the Point Surplus Store for over 30 years. He enjoyed hobby farming that included raising miniature donkeys, elk, white tail deer and white deer. Ernie had a passion for the outdoors and wild life. He was as at his happiest being out in the woods cutting wood and hunting with his son.
Ernie was a member and Past President of the Stevens Point Evening Lions Club, and was an usher for St. Peters Church for many years. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Ernie's name will be established at a later date.
Survivors include his daughter Patricia Simkowski of Madison, his son John (Janet) Simkowski of Stevens Point, his six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Grace, and second wife Loretta, his daughter Bonnie Warzinik, an infant sister and five brothers Harry, Theodore, Stanley, Chester and Leonard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 3, 2023 at St. Peters Catholic Church. Rev. John Potaczek officiating. Burial will follow in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M in the St. Faustina room of St. Peters Church until the time for mass.
