Gary Thomas Prince, 74, of Stevens Point, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, February 22, 2023 at Aspirus Hospital in Stevens Point, after a sudden but mercifully brief battle with cancer.
Gary was born on May 4, 1948 to Judd and Jeannette (Quinn) Prince in Mankato, MN. After a stint in Rhinelander, he and the family eventually moved to Stevens Point, where he attended high school at PJ Jacobs. After graduating he enlisted in the US Navy and after completing his service, returned and attended UWSP, whereupon he graduated with a degree in economics. Shortly thereafter, he began working at Spectra Print, where he was a financial estimator for decades until retirement. Gary was a kind and honest man, loved by many, liked by even more, and possibly disliked by none.
He was a fascinating thinker, always wondering about things great and small, and he always enjoyed sharing his musings with, and hearing those, of others. Among his many interests were truth, freedom, and the American way; natural health; as well wildlife and the natural world. One of the area's top bowlers, he enjoyed many nights over the years at Point Bowl forging friendships and honing his craft, wowing teammates and onlookers alike with multiple 300s and city championships. He partook in many other sporting activities too, many of which he also excelled at and enjoyed sharing with his two sons including golfing, ping pong, swimming, camping and canoeing. After retirement he particularly enjoyed finding, cutting, chopping, and storing wood to heat his home, developing over the years, with considerable help from brother Scott, a veritable lumber operation - but he loved nothing more than spending good times with family and friends, and if it was outside or on the water, all the better.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and survived by his beloved spouse of over 40 years, Linda (Mayek) of Stevens Point; his two sons from a previous marriage - Rob, of Chicago, and Nate, of Madison; his siblings Bob of Tucson, AZ, Scott (Patti) of Stevens Point, Mary Jo (Randy) Reuschlein of Stoughton, and Tom (Norma), of Biron; beloved nieces and nephews, Amanda, Chad, Ashley, Eric, and Adam; as well as grand nephews and nieces, Jensen, Juddlyn, and Jamison.
A Memorial Service will be held for Gary at Highland Church-700 Hoover Avenue Plover, from 3pm - 7pm on what would have been Gary's 75th birthday, Thursday, May 4th.
