Gavin M. Scott

January 5, 1965 — May 9, 2024

Stevens Point

Gavin M. Scott, 59 of Stevens Point, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024 after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and many friends.

Gavin was born to his late parents Gerald and Barbara (Serra) Scott on January 5, 1965 in East Orange, New Jersey. Gavin spent his early years in Florence, South Carolina where he found his love of fishing and nature. He moved to Wheaton, Illinois in 1977, graduating from Wheaton North High School in 1983 where he played bass drum in the school marching band. He could always be found fishing for Carp at the Northside Park lagoon or at his favorite childhood job Toys 'N' Things. Working at the toy store funded his love of model building and hand painting Dungeons & Dragons miniature figures.

Gavin moved in 1983 to attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to study Natural Resources and he never left. He called Point home for over 40 years and forged strong lifelong friendships in town. He continued his love of carp fishing in Point. He won the Riverfront Rendezvous Carp Tournament many times and is the only licensed Carp Guide in Wisconsin.
He was also an avid reader, history enthusiast, and loved reading books about World War II. He was a fan of bad "B" movies, 70's disco, and inappropriate jokes. He was a collector of many things including comic books, coins, autographs, stamps, and movie paraphernalia. Gavin participated in the "World's Largest Trivia Contest" in Point for over 35 years. He knew a lot of obscure things which contributed to his team finishing in the top 10 many times out of as many as 300 teams. He was able to participate this past April in what would be his last contest.

Gavin was strong-willed and stubborn most of the time, but he also had a big heart and a great sense of humor. He was very generous and loyal to his family and friends. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his life experiences. His hearty laugh was infectious, his storytelling was legendary, and his ability to teach the patience and joy of fishing was unequaled. He was also ordained on-line to perform the wedding vows to good friends Madison & Kellen and Thurm & Jennifer.

Gavin is survived by older brother CMSgt (ret) Gerald (Patricia) Scott of St. Charles, Missouri, and his younger brother Andrew (Laura) Scott of Wheaton, Illinois; niece and nephews, Alexis Serrurier (Tom), AJ, Ian, and Colin; great nephews Griffin and Theodore Serrurier; and many loving friends including Mayor Mike & Chris Wiza, Madison Wiza & Kellen Ferkey, and John & Marge Diser.

Gavin will be laid to rest at Guardian Angel Cemetery, Stevens Point, Wisconsin. A celebration of Gavin's life will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00ish p.m. at the Moose Family Center 1025 2nd St N, Stevens Point, Wisconsin 54481.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of 90FM https://90fm.org/about-90fm/donate/ or the American Cancer Society in Gavin's name.
