Gertrude G. Pawelski

November 8, 1939 — September 17, 2023

Town Of Dewey

Gertrude Genevieve Pawelski, known to most as "Gertie" (spoken with a smile), died peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Plover, WI at the age of 83.  Gertie was born on November 8, 1939 to Michael "Mike" and Anna (Waldoch) Pawelski of the Town of Dewey. She also had a sister, Mary.

Gertie lived on a farm in the Town of Dewey for most of her life. In her younger years, she attended Liberty Bell School, a one-room schoolhouse that once stood near the Lake DuBay Dam, just west of what is now Interstate 39. Many of the area children walked for miles to get their education there. Classmates remembered her for her beautiful handwriting, as it looked like the model of perfect cursive writing.

Gertie dedicated her life to caring for her family. She helped her family in all aspects of the farm, from growing potatoes, beans and strawberries to sell, to helping in the garden, and caring for the animals. Gertie was a hard worker, even under the toughest conditions, yet she remained kind and patient. She was a good listener with an amazing memory. Gertie loved a good story and would retell stories of farming and families from the area, and never forgot a detail. She was known as a down-to-earth and sensible, realistic type. Gertie helped her parents into their old age, providing caretaking work until they went on to eternity.

In her later years, Gertie moved into town. She enjoyed volunteering and helping out friends from her apartment building. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Stevens Point, WI.

Gertie is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mary (Pawelski) Cimuchowski and brother-in-law Alvin Cimuchowski. She is survived by her niece Nancy Cimuchowski and nephew Kenny Cimuchowski, along with many cousins.

A graveside ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023 at Guardian Angel Cemetery, in Section J.  Friends and family are welcome to attend the 2 p.m. ceremony.
