Gilbert "Gil" Ferdinand Koressel, 98 of Stevens Point, passed away on October 5, 2025, at Saint Michaels Hospital with his wife, Gerry, at his side under the care of Aspirus Hospice. Gil was born April 9, 1927 in Evansville, Indiana to George and Lillian (Schenk) Koressel.
Gil was proud of growing up on a trucking and dairy farm, where he developed a passion for gardening and animals. Gil often told stories of his life on the farm on Koressel Road in Vandenburgh County Indiana. As a youngster in the 1930's he raised 100 rabbits, and when a passerby wanted to purchase them, he sold them for a nickel each. He had many stories about farming with mules. His family moved to Christney and Gentryville Indiana, later moving back to the farm after his uncles were drafted into the military.
Gil was drafted into the US Army on his 18th birthday, April 9, 1945. Gil's father requested a deferment because he was needed through the harvest season at the farm. In the fall of 1945, he went on to serve in Germany during the Berlin Airlift. There he met is first wife Christa Marie. Gil returned to the US with his new wife, and together they raised two daughters: Christa Sybille and Christa Heidi,
Gil started his career in the garment trade with Shane Company in Evansville Indiana. He worked his way up and ended up being in charge of pattern making. After the Evansville factory was sold, the new owners asked Gil to move to Long Island, New York to run their pattern department, including setting up computer programming for that function. He left NY to pursue an opportunity at Angelica Uniform in Saint Louis Mo.
After the death of his first wife, Christa, Gil met Gerry (Schneider) Edwards at Angelica Uniform. Gil and Gerry were married in St Louis in 1998 and enjoyed 27 happy years together. Upon their retirement they moved from Saint louis to Mill Creek (Stevens Point) Wisconsin, where he was granted his retirement dream of playing on a Wisconsin farm. Gil had a huge garden that he planted too early, sometimes having to replant the vegetables. He didn't like that the growing seasons were later up north in Wisconsin, than they were in Southern Indiana. He shared his bountiful crops with everyone.
Gil developed friendships with the Senior exercise group at Junction City and on occasion he joined them for soup and a Point beer at the Bunny Hop Café.
Gil was multi-talented and helped others make their lives better. He was handy at remodeling and landscaping and made two homes beautiful and comfortable for Gerry and himself.
