"I love you, God bless you" with one hand in the air waving is how John greeted everyone. A huge smile was always on his face when he saw you.
John was born in Chicago in 1945. He was a mischievous boy and that followed him up to Stevens Point. The mischievousness stayed with him his whole life. John graduated from Pacelli and attended UWSP where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. During college he met the love of his life, Barbara. While in college he also was in the Army Reserves, 4-10 Signal Corps. John started work at Worzalla Publishing during this time and remained there his entire career. John had four remarkable children, Johnny, Lori (Mike) Cataldo, Cheryl (Brian) Ligman and Tracy (Jim) Williams.
John had high morals and was very ethical. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus with his dad. John also volunteered for the Portage County Literacy Council and Wisconsin Special Olympics. Finally, he spent several years volunteering for the St. Peter Fall Festival.
John had an older brother Tony (Carol) Butkus, who he would torment. John also had a wonderful sister Margaret (Robert) Check. John was very close to his parents, Tony and Eve Butkus, and spent most of his free time helping his dad out until both of them passed.
John loved playing pool with his brother-in-law Jack (Diana) Montgomery and trying to stump his late brother-in-law, Huey Montgomery, with math puzzles. John loved his mother-in-law Ruth (Richard) Montgomery. John enjoyed watching American Legion baseball and attending boat and auto shows with his best friend Bob Weronke. John loved making people laugh and smile. He loved his dogs, Penny, Prince and Trooper.
John was great at making his grandchildren laugh, Olivia, Joey, AJ, Roman and Tristan. John loved his nieces and nephews, Duane, Debbie, Jenny, Pam, Brian, Anthony, Michelle, Anne, Julie and Rachelle.
John passed unexpectedly, but peacefully, at the Portage County Home on Oct. 7, 2021 with wonderful nurses and personnel who provided amazing care while he was there.
He was preceded in death by his parents Tony and Eve Butkus, Father-in-law Richard Montgomery, Brother-in-law Huey Montgomery, Sister-in-law Diana Montgomery and nephew Anthony Butkus. Shed not a tear for me but impose upon others a smile.
