John L. Dopp, age 93, of Almond, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at the Veteran's Home in King Wisconsin.
John was born on October 9, 1929 to Karl & Esther (Lowe) Dopp in Bancroft, WI. He attended grade school and high school in Almond, graduating in 1947.
Upon graduation John attended the University of Wisconsin Short Course where he received a certificate in March of 1947.
When his Country called in March of 1951, John enlisted in the United States Navy as a radio operator. After completing radio school in San Diego along with a one-year stint in Adak, Alaska, John completed his service in Tokyo and was honorable discharged in March of 1954.
While at radio school in San Diego, John went on a blind date with Martha "Marty" Stites, attending the movie "American in Paris" starring Gene Kelly. That date led to the couple maintaining a long-distance relationship until John came back from overseas. The couple moved to Madison and were married on August 25. 1955 while John was attending UW Madison where he earned a degree in Agricultural Education in August of 1958.
After spending time as a teacher at Waupaca and an Agricultural Extension Agent in Yuba County, California; John took over the family farm in the spring of 1965. He ran the 220 acres, 125 sow feeder pig/cash crop operation until 1996.
During that time, they raised four children, Pierce Dopp of Wausau, Joel Dopp (deceased), Laurel Dopp of Amherst and Kelly Schumann of Waupaca along with their granddaughter Ashton Evertsen of Almond. John is also survived by his three great grandsons and the light of his life, Tommy, Jonny and Luca Evertsen of Almond; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marty; son Joel; and his brother Arvid.
John enjoyed watching high school basketball and baseball games and was an avid supporter of sports at Almond High School. John always had a strong desire for knowledge and learning and kept up with current affairs to the end of his life. John was also very active in the American Legion Post 339 in Almond WI and missed very few Memorial Day parades during his time in the community.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in John's name. All donations will be given to the American Legion Post 339 in Almond WI.
A celebration of life event will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 1:00PM to 4:00PM with Military Honors being conducted at 2:00PM at the Almond American Legion Hall, 1401 Division St, Almond, WI 54909.
