Maija Weifenbach

October 8, 1946 — April 6, 2025

Stevens Point

Maija Weifenbach , 78, of Plover, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, in Whiting, Wisconsin. She was born on October 8, 1946, in Regensburg, Germany, to Latvian parents. Maija spent much of her youth in Chicago and lived most of her adult life in Plover, where she built a life full of family and friendship.

Even as Alzheimer's disease chipped away at her memory, Maija's feisty spirit and sense of humor remained firmly intact. She'd go along with the fun socks and feather boas if that was the theme—but don't even think about taking away her Tootsie Pops.

Everyone was welcome in Maija's home, which was always open to family, friends, and strangers who quickly became friends. It was a place filled with good company, constant snacks, dogs underfoot, and the occasional yelling at the TV during Bears or Sharks games. Whether for holidays, Trivia in Point, or just a casual visit, Maija's home was a gathering spot where people from near and far, from the community and around the world, felt like they belonged. She greeted the world with a warm smile and dirt under her fingernails, always tending to her garden and the people she loved. But don't let the sun hat and sweet demeanor fool you—when the dice came out, she played to win, and more often than not, she did.

Maija took special pride in her involvement with the Junior Women's Club, where she formed lasting friendships. She worked in various roles throughout the community, including at Frame Memorial Church and the local clinic, always finding ways to connect with others and brighten their day. Her clever costume ideas for school dress-up days were unmatched, and her Wheel of Fortune skills were the stuff of legend. Her care packages, always filled with just the right mix of treats and love, became iconic.

Above all, Maija adored her family—both human and canine. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Jim Weifenbach; her daughters, Lisa (Plover), Kristy (Muscat), and Sandra (Plover); her sons-in-law, Kevin and Chris; her brother, Antis, and sister, Benita; and her four beloved grandchildren: Henry Schuttenbach, Jude Schuttenbach, Elise Bender, and Lilly Bender. She was their greatest fan and the cheerleader of their sometimes ridiculous plans.

Maija will be remembered for her warm heart, sharp wit, and remarkable talent for making people feel at home. She had a way of bringing people together—usually with snack attacks, game nights, and maybe a sarcastic remark or two. Her legacy of kindness, humor, and fierce love for her people (and dogs) will live on in the many lives she touched.

A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Wellington Place and Heartland Hospice for taking such great care of our Oma.
