Martha was born August 3, 1943, in Bear Creek, Alabama. Parents: Earl and Delma Hampton. Graduated from Philips High School, Bear Creek in 1961. Attended Florence State University, now known as University of North Alabama. Graduated in 1965 with a degree in Physical Education. Finished her course work in the fall of 1964, was hired by Phillips High School to teach Physical Education the remainder of the school year. From 1965-1966, she taught elementary physical education at Warner Robins Air Force Base School in Warner Robins, Georgia. Was hired via a telephone call in the summer of 1966, due to teacher shortage, by the Stevens Point School District to teach elementary physical education. Her plan was to stay for one year, however, few months after arriving, she was introduced to Jim Schuh. They were married in 1968, and Martha taught for 33 years, retiring in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her parents, Earl and Delma, brothers David and Clyde, and sisters, Glynda and Mary.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Shanahan, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Also survived by Leesa, Elmer, William and Tiana Cachuela. Leesa was a huge part of Martha and Jim's life from the time she was a child and is coordinating this funeral. Martha and Jim were forever grateful for the relationship.
Service work Martha did over the years: Volunteered for the American Red Cross, Operation Bootstrap, WAHPERD - the states organization for Physical Education teachers, and the American Heart Association.
Volunteer work for the American Heart Association, along with Olive White, led to coordinating Jump Rope for Heart in the school district from 1981-1999. In 1984, Martha and Olive created the Stevens Point Wizards Jump Rope Team. Thanks to parents, students, teachers and administrators - the team traveled and performed throughout Wisconsin, as well as Northern Michigan, Minnesota, and Indiana. Olive and Martha were volunteer coaches. Olive retired from the Stevens Point School District in 1995. The team continued performing until 2001. In 2001, thanks to parents and friends of the Wizards, raised enough money to take ten Wizards members to New Zealand to perform in the North and South Island. The New Zealand Heart Foundation coordinated the tour for the team.
Recognitions Martha received during her teaching career: 1977 District Teacher of the Year; American Heart Association Appreciation Certificate; 1983 American Heart Association Volunteer Recognition Award (Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator - JRFH); 1984 - Governor's Special Award for Services to the American Heart Association: American Heart Association of WI Outstanding Volunteer Award; 1985 WI Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (WAHPERD) Teaching Honor Award; UWSP Health and Physical Education Service Award; 1986 Portage County Wellness Recognition Award; 1991 American Heart Association of WI Healthy Heart Ambassador Award; 1992 Stevens Point School District Certification of Appreciation - Promoting Jump Rope for Heart; 1996 - Stevens Point School District Certificate of Merit; 1997 - Stevens Point School District Teacher of the Year; American Heart Association Appreciation Certificate; 1998 - American Heart Association Outstanding Service Award; 2000 - Stevens Point School District Certificate of Recognition Coordinating the Wizards; 2001 WAHPERD Lifetime Award; Kennedy School Certificate of Volunteer Appreciation; The Embassy of the USA in New Zealand Certificate of Appreciation for the Wizards Outstanding Achievement in Strengthening International Understanding; WAHPERD Certificate or Membership for 40 Years; 2003 National Association for Girls and Women in Sports, Pathfinder Award.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Operation Bootstrap; United Way of Portage County; Kennedy Elementary School to honor those students who made the Wizards Jump Rope team a huge success; or, to any organization which helps children and families in need.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Martha will be held at 11:00am on Friday June 6, 2025 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church-3200 Plover Road, Plover. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00am until the time of services. Fr. Arturo Vigueras will be officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery columbarium.
