Richard P. Cooney
82 of Stevens Point, died Monday July 15, 2024, while under hospice care at Tomah VA in Tomah, WI.
Richard was born on July 7, 1942, in Marquette, Michigan to the late Frank and Lillian (Bradley) Cooney. He attended Marquette High School. He entered the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1965 serving in Vietnam.
His marriage to Patricia Jelich took place on September 23, 1961, in Marquette, Michigan. The couple later settled in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. That's when they chose to expand their family by adopting 4 children. Richard worked for the Soo Line Railroad, Worzalla Publishing and Stevens Point Bus Garage when his career ended with his 2006 scooter accident.
For Several years, Richard and wife Patty were avid hockey fans, following the New York Rangers. You could find them frequently at Wisconsin Rapids River Kings and Stevens Point Pointers hockey games. He enjoyed old cars & car shows, going for rides, and eating cheeseburgers.
He also enjoyed collecting Coca Cola items, Harley Davidson items, and riding the Harley across the USA with his wife and their dogs. He loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include his children: Jeffrey (Shelly) Cooney of Custer, Angela (Jim) Clark of Waupaca, Merle Cooney of Stevens Point and Rachel (sig. other Zach) Cooney of Wisconsin Rapids.
Grandchildren: Jordan, Kirsten, Rebecca (Zavier), Laura (Santana), Stephanie and Richard. Great Grandchildren: Braelynn, Jaydin, Tillie and Liam.
Also survived by a sister Margo (James) Woolridge, nieces & nephews and Godchild Michelle Strasser.
He was preceded in death by his wife,Patty on Dec. 16, 2023, parents, brother Frank Cooney Jr and sister Betty Crain.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pisarski Community Funeral Home 2911 Plover Road Plover, Wisconsin on Saturday August 3, 2024. Visitation will be 10am - Noon, with service at noon. Burial will follow at Plover Cemetery, with full Military Honors.
