Ronald J. Check, age 87, of Custer, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.
Ronald was born January 27, 1934 to the late Theresa Thrun in Green Bay, WI. He attended Twin Lakes School in the Town of Sharon and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point. He attended the University of Wisconsin Madison for 2 years under the Agricultural Short Course Program. He served as sergeant in the US Army from 1958-1960, and served in the 32 nd National Guard from 1960-1966. He was a member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans and the Rosholt American Legion.
On November 28, 1959, Ronald married Frances Falkowski in Wausau. Ronald started his milk hauling business in 1959, which is still operating as Twin Lakes Trucking. His other passion was working on the family dairy farm. He never did officially retire.
Faith was very important to Ronald and he was an active member in his church, for many years as co-chair of the picnic committee and steak night committee, as well as a member of the parish council. He was a natural leader and believed in giving back to his community. He was also involved in local politics, as a Town of Sharon Supervisor, as well as a Portage County Board Supervisor for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, playing cards with friends and family, polka music, and attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He was an avid fan of the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Frances, and children Jim (Melinda) Check, Custer, Jeff (Juanita) Check, Custer, Jerry (Brenda) Check, Rosholt, Jacquelyne Check, Chicago, Jolyne (Josh) Ostrowski, Mosinee. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, brothers, Peter (Dawn) Thrun, Custer, Gerald (Elizabeth) Thrun, Rosholt, Charles (Tracy) Thrun, Almond, sisters, Elizabeth Ostrowski, Stevens Point, Rita (Allen) Repinski, Plover, Margaret (Daniel) Glodowski, Indianapolis, IN, and Terri Thrun, Wisconsin Rapids. He is preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Theresa and Peter Thrun, brother-in-law Edwin Ostrowski and sister Delores Wanta.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ronald will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 23, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Polonia. Rev. Alan Guanella will officiate. Burial will full military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Pisarski Funeral Home 703 Second Street Stevens Point. Veterans Ritual will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a parish rosary will conclude the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Masks will be required at the Funeral Home and at church.
