Ronald B. Flugaur

July 26, 1930 — February 12, 2025

Stevens Point

Ronald B. Flugaur of Stevens Point died on February 12, 2025 at the age of 94. Ronald was born on July 26, 1930 in Stevens Point.

He was the son of the late Anton and Edith (Wettstien) Flugaur. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1949, where he was the starting quarterback for the varsity football team.

Ronald served in the military and was a veteran of the Korean War. He enlisted in the Navy on February 29, 1949 and attended bootcamp in Great Lakes, Illinois. After one year of service he was discharged on February 1, 1950. Ronald re-deployed in January of 1951 and did sea service on the USS NK Perry DDR-883 for sixteen months. His Navy rank was HM2 and he served as a Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class. He was discharged from his second tour of duty on November 10, 1952.

His marriage to Ramona Sorenson took place on August 26,1950 at St. Stephen's Church in Stevens Point. In 2020, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends. Ramona passed away this past summer on July 22, 2024.

Ronald, along with his wife, owned and operated Sorenson's Greenhouse and Floral for 36 years before selling the business to their son Gary in 1992. In his professional life, Ron was involved with other greenhouse business owners by serving many years as the President of the Central Wisconsin Florist Association. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Florist Association.

Ronald was active in local volunteer, civic, and religious organizations, including: the Noon Lions; the Knights of Columbus; the Elks Club; and the Foresters American Legion. He also served on the St. Stephen's School Board and as both President and Treasurer of the Pacelli Athletic Association.

Ronald loved to play golf (his clubs were always in the car), even though by his own admission many rounds were more of "a good walk spoiled by that little white ball". He was an avid Packers, Brewers, and Badgers fan. In fact, he and Ramona were Badger football season ticket holders during what he described as "the glory years of Jardine, McClain, and Morton." Ron always quipped that "we got rid of our tickets before the team got good under Alvarez". His favorite pastime during retirement was helping out at the Greenhouse. He often said that it was the perfect retirement job in that he could set his own hours and he no longer had the stress of ownership.

Ronald enjoyed his cottages on Lake Emily and later on Tree Lake, where he would spend time teaching his children and grandchildren how to swim and water ski. He never missed a grandchild's sporting event, concert, or fine art performance. Ronald and Ramona were snowbirds who traveled to Florida every winter for 30 years, where they owned a seaside condominium on Madeira Beach. They loved spending time with the many Sorenson family relatives, who live in the St. Petersburg area.

Survivors include: three daughters: Sharon Kalpinski, Susan (Gregory) Schulist, and Mary Flugaur; three sons: Gary (Annette) Flugaur, Thomas Flugaur, and Rick (Lesa) Flugaur: 16 grandchildren: Robert Jr., Joel, Jenny, Brent, Jesse, Jill, Brianna, Brittney, Brandon, Kristin, Nicole, Kimberly, Alyssa, Ryan, Lindsey, and Troy, as well as 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ramona, his parents, his in-laws Leonard and Johanna Sorenson, his son-in-law Robert Kalpinski, his daughter-in-law Sharon Flugaur; two brothers: Norman (Betty), Robert (Rose); and five sisters: JoAnne (Art) Giese, Lorraine (Ben) Glodowski, Jeanette (Jay) Sturm, Ethel (Richard) Bord, Phyllis (Tom) Schelvan.
