Sister Elizabeth Dedo, 90 years old, a Sister of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis for the last 63 years died on August 10, 2022, at Regina Healthcare Center in Richfield, OH.
Sister Elizabeth was born August 28, 1931, in Ironwood, Michigan to the late John and Angeline (Juback) LaSota. After the death of her birth mother, she was raised by the late Mary (Cestkowski) Dedo and family.
She attended local schools in Ironwood and following graduation from Luther L. Wright High School in 1949, she moved to Chicago where she was employed by Spiegel and later, Montgomery Ward.
On August 10, 1959, Sister Elizabeth was received into the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis in Stevens Point, WI. She was given the name of Sister Mary Ronald which she later changed to her baptismal name of Sister Elizabeth. She professed her final vows on August 10, 1966.
Sister Elizabeth earned a BS degree in Education from St. Norbert College, DePere, WI, and a MA degree in Religious Studies from Mundelein College, Chicago. Her teaching ministry began at St. Peter School in Stevens Point and continued for 41 years in the Dioceses of LaCrosse, Green Bay, and Milwaukee. For six (6) years, Sisters Elizabeth and Sally Dulak managed a residential group home for developmentally challenged adults in Oshkosh, WI. In 1984, they were recognized for outstanding community service by the Association for Retarded Citizens.
Sister Betty retired to St. Joseph Motherhouse in 2010 and offered supportive services to the congregation. In August 2020, Sister Elizabeth moved Marymount Congregational Home in Garfield Heights, OH and then to Regina Healthcare Center in Richfield, OH where she died this past August.
Sister Elizabeth is survived by one sister, Margaret Lechman of Schiller Park, IL, many nieces and nephews and the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Angeline LaSota, and Mary Dedo; sisters Polly Alleva, Josephine Parrish, Irene Elliott, Anne Karenen, and Helen Strubble; brothers, Joseph Dedo, John Dedo, Frank Dedo, Joseph LaSota, John LaSota, Paul LaSota, Frank LaSota, and a niece, Karen Parrish.
Visitation for Sister Elizabeth Dedo will take place at Holy Spirit Parish on October 27, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial which will follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Sisters' Cemetery.
