Sister Edith Gorski, age 89, a Sister of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis for 70 years, died July 22, 2021 at Villa St. Joseph, Garfield Heights, Ohio. Sister Edith was born November 29, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Stanley and Hedwig (Machiewicz) Gorski.
She attended local schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On August 10,1950 Sister Edith was received into the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis in Stevens Point. She professed her final vows on August 10, 1957. In 1964 she earned a BA degree in Education from Alverno College in Milwaukee and later received a MA degree in Counseling from St. Louis University.
Sister Edith began teaching and serving as Principle from 1952 until 1971 in various Catholic schools in Wisconsin. In 1971 to 1978 she served as the Coordinator and then as the Provincial Administrator of St' Joseph Motherhouse in Stevens Point. At the completion of her term of office she ministered as the Director for Religious (Vicar) in the Dioceses of Covington and Lexington Kentucky from 1982 until 1989. Sister Edith moved back to Wisconsin and ministered for the Diocese of Madison as the Associate Director of Family Ministry and the Director of Marriage Preparation from 1982 to 1997. In 1997 to 2000 she was the Director of Renew 2000 Spiritual Program for the Diocese of Madison.
For the next 18 years she ministered as an English-speaking tutor. In 2019, Sister Edith relocated to Garfield Heights, Ohio, to be with other retired Sisters.
Sister Edith is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerome and Mary Gorski, Stanley and Nancy Gorski and Barbara Gorski.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Hedwig Gorski, Her siblings and in-laws: Edward and LaVerne Gorski, John and Deloris Gorski, Estelle and Robert Aspenleiter, Richard and Loretta Gorski, Mary Ann and Thomas Woiak, and David Gorski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday October 19, 2021 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Stevens Point. Burial will take place in the St. Joseph Convent cemetery. Masks are required at the funeral mass.
