Sister Loretta Zelewski, age 96, a Sister of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Joseph for 80 years, died on August 27, 2023, at Regina Healthcare Center in Richfield, Ohio. Sister Loretta was born on April 13, 1927, to the late Martha (Kaminski) and Bernard Zelewski in Stevens Point, WI.
Sister Loretta entered the community from St. Peter Parish in 1942 and was accepted into the novitiate on August 10, 1942, taking her final vows on August 10, 1950. Sister served as a homemaker and pastoral minister at missions in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, and Puerto Rico. In Wisconsin, this included convents in Milwaukee, Beaver Dam, Menasha, and Wausau. She also worked in the kitchen at St. Joseph Convent (the Motherhouse) in Stevens Point. From 1963 to 1971 and 1973-1984, she helped parishes, schools, and Sisters at three missions in Puerto Rico. She enjoyed being of service to the people who were very poor, humble, and appreciative of what was done to help them. Living among the people deepened Sister Loretta's faith and love. Sister Loretta lived a life of deep gratitude, and it was important to her. She always stated that she was grateful for the experiences she had working with the poor and elderly and with others she touched and who touched her.
Sister Loretta is survived by her five nieces, nephews (Marie Swartz, Margaret Krall, David Stanislawski, Bill Stanislawski, Barb Yach), grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha (Kaminski) and Bernard Zelewski, sisters Evelyn, Chrysantha and brothers Leonard, Marion, Adam, and Casimir.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Holy Spirit Parish in Stevens Point, WI. Visitation will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial following. Sister will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Sisters Cemetery.
