Verna Lorraine (Prusynski) Johnson, of Plover, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 13, 2023 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital after suffering from a heart attack the previous day at home.
Verna, 97, was born October 27, 1925 in Wisconsin Rapids (Biron), WI. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Josephine (Muras) Prusynski.
She attended Biron grade school, graduating from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School, Class of 1943.
She met her future husband, Arnold R. (Arnie) Johnson when she was 12 years old in 1937. They married on June 17, 1944 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. After their marriage the couple settled in Biron until 1960 when they moved to a home they built on Highway 54, Wisconsin Rapids. In 1963 they purchased the Rudolph Community Hall (Arnie's Bar). After retirement they moved to Milladore then to the Stevens Point area. Her husband Arnold preceded her in death in 1982. Verna moved to the Plover area in 2002 where she lived by herself at home until her passing.
Verna enjoyed family visits, playing cards, doing crossword and word search puzzles, fishing, watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, rarely missing a game on TV. She prayed her rosary daily and listened to Mass on TV. Verna was very personable, loved watching people come and go in her neighborhood, enjoyed visiting with people and could strike up a conversation with anyone she met.
Survivors include her children; Richard P. (Cindy Andersen) Johnson of Bruce, WI., David C. Johnson of Nekoosa and Cheryl (Mike) Bembenek of Custer. Five grandchildren: Rhonda (Dave) Cain-Carrell, Scott (Mary) Johnson, Tim Johnson, Chad Bembenek, Carie Bembenek. 8 great grandchildren: Derek Bruley, Nick, Riley, Zach, Jacob, Jared (all Johnson), Mariah and Alea Bembenek and one great-great-grandchild Bronson Johnson, daughters-in-law Cindy Johnson of Wisconsin Rapids and Pat Johnson, Rudolph, granddaughter-in-law Lori Bembenek of Rio, many nieces and nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arnie, one grandchild Quint Bembenek, one great great grandchild, five brothers; Ollie, Severe "Speg", Father Chet, George and Leonard and two sisters; Marcella Miller and Dorothy Fehrmann.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.at Springville Wharf, 2811 Plover Springs Drive, Plover, WI.
We would like to thank her caregivers: Ann, Judy and Becky for the devoted and excellent care given to Mom (Grandma J) these last years so she could stay in her home. Thank you also to Sandy, Mary and Lisa from Inclusa for their help in keeping Mom in her home. Lastly a big thank you to the Ambulance personnel and the doctors, nurses and other personnel at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for the excellent care given to Mom in her last hours.
