William (Bill) Houtary, 88, of Stevens Point, WI gently passed away in his sleep on May 13, 2023 at his home.
Bill was born in Pence, WI to Arvid and Anne (Anderson) Houtary on August 28, 1934. He grew up on a farm outside of Bayfield WI. Later his family moved into Bayfield and he graduated from Bayfield High School in 1952. After high school he went to work on the Great Lakes ore boats. Later he joined the US Army on October 5th 1955, and served as a radio operator in Europe. After his honorable discharge on September 20th, 1957 he worked for the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He weighed trucks at the scales north of Stevens Point. He went out for coffee at the Blue Top Drive In where he met the cutest little car hop, Mary, and she became the love of his life.
They married September 24, 1959. Bill transferred to being an electrician for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation initially based out of Madison, then Green Bay, and later out of Eau Claire. He installed traffic signal lights, light posts, and signs. Bill and Mary retained his childhood home in Bayfield, where his family enjoyed many of Bill's fry bread tacos on Applefest weekends
Bill retired at age 55 and he was proud to say he was retired as many years as he worked.
During his early retirement, he and Mary liked camping in Northern Wisconsin. They enjoyed fishing in Canada and fulfilled his dream of fishing in Alaska.
Bill is survived by: his wife, Mary Zarecki Jaworski Houtary. He is also survived by his Four children: Judith Jaworski, James Jaworski, Jane (Larry) Leton, Garolyn (Jim) Nitka. Twelve grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arvid and Anne
and his siblings: Herbert (Sonja) Houtary, "Harvey (Theresa) Houtary"
Arlene (Simon-Bud) Crase Thomas (Jeanne) Houtary, Richard (Annmarie) Houtary, And an infant brother, Phillip.
Funeral Services will be held for William at the Pisarski Funeral Home-703 Second Street, Stevens Point on Thursday May 18th at 11:00AM.
