Alfred B. "Oppie" Laszinski , 89, of Stevens Point, died early Thursday morning, March 2, 2017, at his home while under the care of Southern Care Hospice.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1928, in Marathon County, to the late Bernard and Clara ( Bembenek) Laszinski and attended St. Peter's Grade School, P.J. Jacobs High School and UW-SP.
Alfred entered the U.S. Navy on June 27, 1945, in Milwaukee, serving during World War II as a Yeoman 3 rd Class. He received the WWII Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on Aug. 28, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri.
On Oct. 27, 1951, he was married to Esther Stanchik at St. Mary's Catholic Church-Torun.
Alfred had worked as a lineman for the Telephone Company for over 40 years before retiring. He was very active civically, serving as Alderman, Police and Fire Commissioner and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 6. He had also been active in youth sports, youth baseball coaching and tournament director for St. Peter's 8 th Grade Basketball Tourney. In the 1960s & '70s, Alfred also umpired countless softball games for the Rec. Dept.
In later years, he and Esther split their time between Stevens Point and Tucson, Arizona, where they could take part in his real passion: golf. Alfred golfed so much that he created his own rules and scoring system. Much to his chagrin, these rules were not adopted by the USGA.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Stevens Point; children, Nancy Laszinski of Centralia, Washington, Bryan Laszinski and Mike (Kate) Laszinski of Stevens Point; grandchildren, Aija Laszinski, Ariana Laszinski (Mark), Aaron Kirschbaum and Tanya Grorich; great-grandchildren, Micah, Ela, Silas, Cody, Levi, Jordan, Gabe and Tristen; great-great-granddaughter, Finely. Further survived by one brother, Clarence "Paul" (Marge) Laszinski of Stevens Point; and one sister, Bernadine Johnson of Milwaukee.
Preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Edward.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Alfred's name at a later date.
The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Rev. Arul Joseph Visuvasam officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Family and friends may call after 9:00 A.M.
