Chester J. Bembenek, Sr., age 87, of Custer, died Thursday morning, Sep. 3, 2009, at St. Michael's Hospital.
He was born on July 26, 1922, in the Portage County town of Sharon to the late Joseph and Pearl (Repinski) Bembenek. Chester served in the United States Army during World War II and was discharged in 1945. On June 9, 1951, he was married to Leona Klismith at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
Chester worked as a millwright for C.R. Meyer and later Consolidated Papers, Inc. – Stevens Point Division. He retired on Sep. 30, 1984. Chester had 29 years at the Stevens Point Division and a total of 40 years with the company.
After retirement, he and Leona lived in Sayner, then moved to Custer in 1992. He was an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman and enjoyed reading and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Chester is survived by his wife, Leona of Custer; two daughters, Karen (Lee "Colin") Glaske of Stevens Point and Linda (William) Culek of New London; three sons, Chester Jr. of Stevens Point, Marvin (Betty) of Golden, CO and Alan (Darlene) of Junction City; two sisters, Elaine Ferch of Menominee Falls and Marcella Jurgella of Stevens Point; two brothers, Robert (Geraldine) of Rosholt and Melvin (Frances) of Tulsa, OK; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by two brothers, Florian and Lawrence.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover with the Rev. Sagayaraj Augustine officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pisarski Community Funeral Home in Plover and again on Wednesday at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time for Mass. The St. Stanislaus Rosary Society and Catholic Order of Foresters, both of which Chester's wife, Leona, is a member of, will combine with the parish rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
