Daniel A. Newby—devoted husband, father, and grandfather—passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on October 4, 1942, to Claude and Mabel (Rodgers) Newby, Dan grew up in Stevens Point and graduated from PJ Jacobs High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1966, he joined the Laborers’ International Union, earning recognition in 2016 for 50 years of dedicated membership. He took great pride in his work and retired as a welding instructor at the Laborers’ Training Center in Almond.

On October 10, 1970, Dan married the love of his life, Mary (Jelinski). Together they built a family and welcomed two children, Craig and Laura.

Dan was happiest outdoors and working with his hands. He had a gift for creating—turning metal into whimsical creatures, carving mushrooms from wood, and crafting anything his imagination sparked. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time outside. Some of the family’s best memories include boat rides on the river. Dad loved to waterski in his younger years with Mom at the wheel.

He also cherished tending his apple orchard and sharing its harvest with anyone who stopped by. His Corvette brought him joy as well, and he loved attending car shows and talking shop with fellow enthusiasts.

Above all, Dan was a proud, generous man who loved his family deeply. He never hesitated to help anyone who needed a hand. He will be profoundly missed.

Dan is survived by his children, Craig (Sabra) Newby and Laura (Michael) Cotter; grandsons Jack and Liam Newby; step‑granddaughter Sam Cotter; sisters Joan Suhr, Margie Newby, Susie (David) Krutza, and Cindy Newby; sisters‑in‑law Geraldine Jelinski and Diane Newby; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary; his parents, Claude and Mabel Newby; in‑laws Joseph and Regina Jelinski; brother Robert Newby; and brothers‑in‑law Marv Suhr and Donald Jelinski.
