Edward J. "Ed" Bernas:

Of Stevens Point, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, June 29, 2013 at his home.

Age 87, Ed was born August 29, 1925 in Stevens Point. He was the son of the late Casmir and Mary (Opachan) Bernas. Ed attended local schools.

Ed was a veteran of World War II. He entered the United States Army on January 25, 1943 in Milwaukee, WI. He served with Company B 534th Boat and Shore Regiment, Combat Engineers 4th Special Brigade, serving as a Marine Engineman. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Three Overseas Service Bars, the Meritorious Unit Award and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharge on January 22, 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisc.

Upon his discharge, Ed served two years with the Wisconsin National Guard as a Technician for 4 headquarters Battery. He was discharged from the National Guard on May 18, 1948.

His marriage to Genevieve Walczak took place on April 10, 1948 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. After their marriage, the couple settled in Stevens Point. His wife, Genevieve, survives.

Ed was the owner/operator of Ed Bernas Heating and Cooling in Stevens Point for close to fifty years when he retired in 2007.

Ed was a Scout Master for Troop 290 of St. Peter's Church and also Explorer Post for older scouts for many years.

He was a member of the Berens-Scribner American Legion Post 6 and the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars.)

He loved going to his cottage, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

In lieu of Flowers, a memorial in Ed's name will be established at a later date.

Ed is survived by his wife: Genevieve of Stevens Point, one daughter: Donna (Dave) Suchon of Stevens Point, and his three sons: Tom (Stephanie) Bernas of Plover and Jim (Cindy) Bernas and Bob (Carol) Bernas both of Stevens Point.

Six grandchildren: Joey, Haley, Eddie, Alex, Matthew and Danny Bernas.

One brother: Casmir (Marge) Bernas of Stevens Point.

Two step-grandchildren: Michael Suchon and Michelle Kizewski. Three step-great-grandchildren: Brittany, Meagan and Nathan.

Ed was preceded in death by one son: John, two brothers: Raymond and Eugene, and two sisters: Theresa and Stella.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. Thomas Lindner officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Church until the time for mass. The Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family.
