Edward Karcheski
Formerly of Junction City, died Saturday morning, May 30, 2010 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Age 90.
He was born February 7, 1920 in Gary, Indiana. He was the son of the late Anthony and Michaeline (Derdowski) Karcheski.
Edward moved with his grandparents to a farm in Conrath, Wisconsin at the age of 7. He attended Dogville State Grade School and Ladysmith High School.
He moved to the Chicago area looking for employment,
that is where he met his future wife, Edith Politylo. He married Edith on June 28, 1941 at Assumption Church in Chicago.
Ed entered the Air Corp on December 14, 1943 in Chicago. He was later transferred to the United States Army infantry where his services would be more beneficial to the cause in Europe.
He served with the 63rd Infantry Division, Blood and Fire 254 Regiment Company B during World War II. He served in Germany, England and Switzerland.
Ed was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946 at Camp McCoy, WI.
Upon his discharge, he returned to Chicago where he resided with his wife and children. Ed worked for Blaw Knox and Chicago Bridge and Iron works as a welder until moving to Stevens Point in 1966.
Remembering the skills he acquired in his youth farming he moved to the Town of Carson and farmed until he and his wife moved to the Veterans Home in King in 1995.
Never one to sit back for the ride as resident at the Veterans home, Ed worked as a tugger driver, grounds keeper for the chapel and was an escort for fellow veterans to their doctor appointments.
He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the AMVETS at King.
Ed is survived by and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 69 years, Edith of King, WI.
His three daughters, Margaret Leggero of Crown Point, IN, Cindy Friauf of Milwaukee, WI and Catherine Karcheski of Stevens Point.
Two sons, Phillip (Kathy) Karcheski of London, KY and Christopher (Hattie) Karcheski of Santa Fe, TN.
His nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Also many nieces and nephews. His special friends and extended
family: Stephanie Stokes, Patrick Bacher, Richard Louze, Paul Kirsh and Sam Rhoda. His close friends: Mr.& Mrs. Jim O'Donohue and Linda Rogers at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.
Ed was preceded in death by four sisters and their husbands, Mary, Stella, Evelyn and Hedwig.
Ed's stories and jokes will be missed at family gatherings and parties.
Funeral Mass will be 11:30 AM Friday June 4, 2010 at the Main Chapel of the Veterans Home in King. Rev. Paul Vandenhogen officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery at King. Family and friends may call from 10:30 AM Friday at the Main Chapel until the time for mass. The Pisarski/Dzikoski funeral home is assisting the family with arrangements.
