Eugene Joseph Polum, age 91, of Stevens Point died early on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Northcrest Assisted Living Center while under the care of Heartland Hospice with his family and the wonderful Northcrest care providers at his side. The family would like to extend many thanks to all the staff at Northcrest that kept Eugene happy and healthy these last 5 years.
Eugene was born June 18, 1935 in Wausau, WI. He was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Lubinski) Polum. His family later moved to Stevens Point where Eugene attended St. Peter's Grade School and P.J. Jacobs High School.
Eugene often spoke of his early years which included traveling from town to town and selling sacks of potatoes door to door. Eugene also worked as a bellhop at the Whiting Hotel and knew the building inside out. Supposedly he lost that job after crashing a wedding party and being caught drinking beer. Eugene was employed at Joerns Furniture where he worked for 38 years retiring in 1997.
Eugene enjoyed his retirement years in his family home on West Clark Street. He took road trips up north and collected road maps from every trip. He looked forward to the 4th of July summer picnics with family as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas. He had a huge sweet tooth and if he ran out of his strawberry cakes or peanut butter cups, he would call to let us know.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Joseph & Eva, siblings Daniel Polum, Gary Polum, Joan Gagas, and Brother-in-law Ronald Gagas, Brother Leonard Polum and Sister-in-law Vera Polum.
Survivors include his sisters in law Marchita Polum and Evelyn Polum. His nieces and nephews; Stephanie & John Haka, Tim Golla, Ann & Ken Raflik, Michele & Jim White, Matthew Golla, Mark Golla, Monica & Peter Thome, Rose & Bill Dickenson.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Eugene will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, 800 Fourth Avenue, Stevens Point. Reverand John Potaczek will be officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 9:30 AM until time of service in the Saint Faustina Room at the church. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery. Pisarski Funeral Homes are honored to be serving the Polum Family.
