Joseph A. Omernik, 90, of Whiting, died Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 2015, at Mount View Care Center in Wausau.
He was born on Oct. 16, 1924, in the Marathon County town of Franzen, to the late Joseph Sr. and Theodora (Rogalla) Omernik.
Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 87th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He entered the service on May 25, 1943, and he was honorably discharged on Jan. 28, 1946.
On Sep. 24, 1955, he was married to Edna Berkholtz at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Mill Creek. She survives. Following their marriage, Joe worked for his brother in northern California and Nevada in the lumber business. He built their first home in Leggett, Calif. The couple moved back to Stevens Point in 1969. He retired on Jan. 31, 1987, from Joerns Furniture Company in Stevens Point.
His interests included fishing and woodworking. He was a craftsman at building wood furniture and made many items for many people. He also enjoyed, and was self-taught in, singing and playing the guitar and keyboard.
In addition to his wife Edna, he is survived by his daughters, Joan (Fred) Garski of Stevens Point, and Judy (Tim) Burrows of Weston; grandchildren, Jason Omernik and Jordan Garski; great-granddaughter, Haley Omernik; great-great-granddaughter, Jaxynn McClintock; three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by five brothers and seven sisters.
A very special thank-you to the Ministry Hospice and Mount View Care Center staff who provided extraordinary care and support to Joe and his family through the end of his life.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stevens Point with the Rev. Jerzy Rebacz officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home, 703 Second Street, Stevens Point, and again at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time for Mass.
VFW Post No. 10262 of Plover, of which Joe was a member, will hold a ritual at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and will provide full military honors following Mass at the church on Wednesday.
