MARY HELEN T. DIEDRICK - MAYER
Of Stevens Point, was called home by her Lord, on January 20, 2007 while at the Point Manor Assisted Living Center in Stevens Point.
She was strong and fought a tough and courageous battle with Ulcerative Colitis and congestive heart failure. Mary Helen was born March 25, 1928 in Ironwood, Michigan. She was the daughter of the late Edward M & Elizabeth (NEE: Gonia) McHugh. Mary has an older sister, Kathleen "Kay" Stark, currently residing in Ironwood. She lost a brother, Thomas, when she was only 8 years old from a hunting accident.
At age 2 ½, Mary contracted Polio, and most of her adolescent life was spent having many surgeries on her legs in Milwaukee and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
She was blessed as a child to have had a swimming tank built in her basement of her home in Ironwood by her father to help her with water therapy and to help her regain the use of her legs.
When Mary Helen was a teenager, her family moved to West Allis, Wisconsin, where her father was an engineer for Allis-Chalmers. She attended high school and graduated from Holy Angels Catholic Academy for girls in Milwaukee in 1946. Mary Helen was known for her bubbly and mischievous behavior. She attended State Teachers College in Milwaukee after high school. She had a very full and exciting life, and enjoyed being a "Career Girl" in the 1950's and never looked at her disability as a hindrance to her. Mary had also lived for awhile in Miami, Florida, and also Detroit, Michigan. She had a beautiful singing voice, and love of the Big Band Music and drama. She worked in Radio and Television in Milwaukee also. She then took a job as a legal secretary in Green Bay, Wisc. That is where she met her husband, Robert W. Diedrick. The couple was married on Sept. 17, 1958, but were later divorced in 1975.
She then met Henry Mayer of Port Washington. They were married October 12, 1977, these were her happiest years. They bought a home in Arizona City, Arizona, where Mary Helen took up golf, which she learned to love. She moved back to Wausau, Wisc. to be near her daughter, Julie, in 1985 following the death of her husband. She most recently had been living at Point Manor Assisted Living Facility so that she could be close to both her children, Bob & Julie.
She made friends wherever she went and was always thought of as a sweet person. She will be remembered for her contagious laugh and generous and giving nature. She loved to share her "Candy Dish" to whoever visited her room at Point Manor. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and though wasn't a "grandmotherly grandma" she kept them very close to her heart, praying the rosary for them, and was always interested in their lives. Mary Helen loved trips to the casino, and in her earlier years playing bingo. She was an avid reader and loved staying on top of current events while watching CNN. She will be sadly missed by all those who knew her, especially her daughter, Julie, who will feel a huge void in her life, having cared for her mother for so many years.
She will also be missed by her dear life long friend, Jeri LaPointe, of Tucson, Arizona whom she prayed the rosary with over the phone to keep in touch. She made several wonderful friends at Point Manor.
She is survived by her two children: her son Robert (Kathy) Diedrick of Merrill, Wisc. and her daughter Julie (Bob) Cyran of Stevens Point. Her three grandsons, Lucas Krall of Duluth, Minn., Dustin Krall of Oneida, Wisc. and Daniel Lee of Stevens Point. Two step-grandchildren, Rachael & Dane McKeel, and one great-step-grandson, Xavier McKeel. She is also survived by a birth son, Tim Stark and his children of North Dakota.
The Family wishes to thank everyone, especially, Bev, Sabrina and Michelle and the entire staff at Point Manor for making mom's last year a happy and full one.
