Obituary

Robert Allen “Bob” Zdroik passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 13.

Bob was born on June 5, 1943, at home on Bukolt Avenue, to Karl and Florence (Freda) Zdroik. He attended St. Peter’s Grade School, Emerson School, and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1961. In his youth, he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball.

On October 6, 1962, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Judy (Trzinski) Zdroik, at St. Peter’s Church. Together, they shared 49 years of marriage until Judy’s passing on November 13, 2011.

Bob’s first job was at Dad’s Root Beer. At age 18, he began working for Consolidated Papers, Whiting Division, which was later purchased by Stora Enso. He dedicated 40 years to the same company, from 1961 until his retirement in 2001, starting in the machine room and later working as a boiler operator.

In 1986, Bob and Judy purchased a small hobby farm for the enjoyment of their children and grandchildren, where Bob loved spending time outdoors, hunting, puttering around, and fixing anything that needed repair—he was always handy and could solve just about any problem. In retirement, Bob and Judy purchased a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, taking many wonderful trips with their riding group. They also spent 8 winters in Rockport, Texas, traveling with a close circle of friends.

Bob enjoyed spending time at South Point restaurant. He loved visiting casinos and buying lottery tickets "just in case." In his later years, he was blessed with the companionship of his special friend, Dorothy Mason. Dorothy’s family also grew to love and enjoy time with Bob. Bob and Judy, along with Ed and Dorothy, shared a long friendship that began in their school days.

Bob is survived by his children: Karen (Mark) Danczyk, Cathy (Joe) Gruber, John (Ann) Zdroik, and Sue (DeWayne) Burant; six grandchildren: Michael (Jordan) Gruber, Marc Gruber, Derek Burant, Katie Burant (Garrett Gentry), Gunner Zdroik (Nina Marchigiani), and Montana Zdroik (Aidan Everard); and three great-grandchildren: Easton, Oakley, and Everly Gruber. He is also survived by his brothers, Ronald (Carol) Zdroik, Milwaukee, and Gary (Jackie) Zdroik; and brothers-in-law, David, Dennis, and Donald (Joan) Trzinski.

He was preceded in death by his wife Judy; his parents, Karl and Florence (Freda) Zdroik; his sister Karen; his sister-in-law Carol Trzinski and his parents-in-law, Joseph and Verona (Lukasavage) Trzinski.

The family extends a special thank you to neighbor Dave Birge for his kindness and help with lawn care and winter driveway maintenance in Bob’s later years. They also wish to thank Dr. Onitilo, Oncology; Dr. Anderson, Urology; Dr. Manzon and staff; and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care.
