Sophia Gburek, age 91, died Thursday, Oct, 1, 2009, in Canoga Park, California.
She was born on June 14, 1918, in Chicago to the late Karl and Bernice (Wolski) Pawlik.
In 1935, Sophia was married to Joseph Gburek at St. Mary Catholic Church in Torun. Joseph died on May 25, 1989. The couple moved to Los Angeles, CA, in 1966. After moving to California, Sophia went to school to become a nurse's aide. She loved this vocation, until her retirement let her fulfill her dream of becoming an artist.
Survivors include eight children, David (Barbara) of Mosinee, Clarence (Audrey) of Marengo, IL, Alfred (Sandra) of Arbor Vitae, Jerome of California, Norman of Antigo, Anita (Myron) Kedrowski of California, Jean Conrad of Oregon, and Sally (Tom) Webb of California; brother, Edward Pawlik of Wisconsin Rapids; sister, Louise (Gaylord) Lepper of Mosinee; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Sophia spent considerable effort and time in supporting her extended family in Poland. Numerous trips and her resources helped to make a richer existence for all.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sophia was preceded in death by her son, James; two grandchildren; one brother, Tom, and one sister, Rose Marie Carfora.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Torun with the Rev. Wesley Janowski officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time for Mass. Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home, Stevens Point, is assisting the family with arrangements.
