Sophie R. Jakusz, 92, of Stevens Point, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Whispering Pines in Plover.
A lifelong resident of Portage County, Sophie was born on Sep. 25, 1920, to the late Alexander and Sophia (Matuga) Kieliszewski and attended Liberty Bell School and was a 1938 graduate of the St. Joseph's Academy in Stevens Point. On July 6, 1940, her marriage to Albin Jakusz took place at St. Peter Catholic Church. Albin died on June 1, 1978.
Sophie was employed in clerical work with the Portage County Offices of the Sheriff's Department, Treasurer and Taxroll. She had also worked at Herrschners. In retirement, Sophie continued to work as a court bailiff for the Portage County Circuit Court.
She was a 50-plus year member of St. Peter's Rosary Society and a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She also had a passion for gardening.
Survivors include her daughters and sons, Delphine (James) Petzke of Medford, Robert (Margaret) of Stevens Point, Norbert (Betty) of Alexandria, Minn., Theresa (Dennis) Gagas of Stevens Point, and Mary Page of Marshfield; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Sr. Catherine Kieliszewski SSJ-TOSF of Lima, Peru; and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Kieliszewski of Milwaukee, and Evelyn Kieliszewski of Milladore.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sophie was preceded in death by her son, Sylvester; brothers, Ignatius, Andrew and Ambrose; and sister, Marian Rondeau.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point with the Rev. Arul Joseph V. officiating. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery. St. Peter's Rosary Society will pray the rosary at 9:15 a.m. and visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday both in the St. Faustina Room of the church.
